Grades 7-12

Foundations: Still Life Drawing

Youth will learn to draw naturalistically by studying and drawing still lifes. They will learn to seek interesting compositions, the importance of measuring for accurate proportions, and how to excel through sensitive use of light and shade. Youth will also be expected to keep a sketchbook and practice still lifes at home.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Still Life Painting

Youth will be introduced to basic color theory, as well as learn to use oil paints. They will learn techniques in mixing paints to get various colors, they will also learn to use a palette. Youth will utilizing foundational still life drawing skills to  begin with a charcoal painting and transition toward adding color.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Analytical Figure Drawing 

Learning to draw the human figure from various angles is as skill that is developed through the study of artistic anatomy, and experimental gesture drawing, attempting to draw the figure in action. Youth will learn about lines of action, utilizing cylinders, cubes, a combination of geometric and organic shapes to create accurate drawings of the human figure without the use of a model.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Basics of Perspective Drawing 

Youth will be exposed to perspective drawings: one point, two point, and three point perspective. Youth will learn the basics of interior and exterior designs, experimenting by inventing rooms and buildings, but doing so accurately. Design and composition skills creating various moods by modifying the placement of the horizon line and vantage point will aid the youth in their illustrations. Youth will learn how to apply light source to their drawings as well.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Portrait Drawing

The course will offer the opportunity for the youth to study anatomy and standard proportions of the face, and begin to recognize nuances of facial varying facial expressions as they develop a sensitivity for mood. They will gain knowledge and confidence in drawing faces from various angles.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Introduction to Acrylic

Drawing and painting from a photograph utilizing acrylic paints to paint with detail. Youth will be encouraged to paint with volume by utilizing foundational drawing skills from observation. Since acrylic paints dry fast, youth will learn to use and take care of a wet palette. Youth will also learn to paint from thin to thick.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Introduction to Illustration: Part One

Creating illustrations involves utilizing basic foundational drawing and painting skills to create a new scene that has never been depicted before. It is an exhilarating process and become more exciting as foundational skills are mastered. Youth with first learn to produce a full valued charcoal drawing of their desired scene.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Introduction to Illustration: Part Two

Creating illustrations involves utilizing basic foundational drawing and painting skills to create a new scene that has never been depicted before. It is an exhilarating process and become more exciting as foundational skills are mastered. Youth with first learn to produce a full valued charcoal drawing of their desired scene. In the second class, youth will create a full color painting of the based on the values of the charcoal drawing.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Creating Graphic Novels: Part One

Youth will learn to compose panels of various perspectives to create a page of a graphic novel. They will learn to tell a story through illustrations. In the first class, youth will learn character design, and attempt to draw their main characters from various angles. They will also learn the basics of inking by using thin markers of various widths. Youth will learn to vary line quality to create more interesting effects.

Grades 7-12

Foundations: Creating Graphic Novels: Part Two

Youth will learn to compose panels of various perspectives to create a page of a graphic novel. They will learn to tell a story through illustrations. In the second class, youth will illustrate their first page of a graphic novel, going from thumbnail sketches, to a final pencil design, and then adding ink to the page.
